Two friends who died on Yr Wyddfa tried calling 999, inquest hears
BBC News reports that during an inquest, it was revealed that two friends, Eddie Hill (20) and Jayden Long (19), who died on a mountain ridge in Eryri (also known as Snowdonia) on 19 February, had tried calling 999.
Philip Benbow, lead co-ordinator of Llanberis Mountain Rescue team, testified that they received an abandoned 999 call from Long’s phone three hours prior to the discovery of their bodies. The call was initially not acted upon due to a lack of information about the location and nature of the emergency.
Det Con James Lloyd from North Wales Police acknowledged that attempts were made to contact the caller but stated that "the incident wasn’t escalated as it should have been." He noted there had been learning for police staff on how to handle such calls in the future. Long’s father criticized the response, labeling it "incompetence".
The assistant coroner for North West Wales, Sarah Riley, concluded that both men died as a result of falling while walking on Crib y Ddysgl, a ridge with "full winter conditions."
