Ukraine Faces ‘Toughest Winter’ Since Russia’s Invasion, UN Warns
BBC News reports that Ukraine is bracing for its "toughest winter" since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, according to Alexander De Croo, head of the UN development agency.
De Croo warned of a potential "humanitarian catastrophe" if Russian attacks disrupt access to power and water. He attributed Russia’s systematic targeting of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, launching around-the-clock aerial attacks, including with jet-powered drones.
This comes amid intensifying conflict between Russia and Ukraine, with both sides denying deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure. Recent strikes have hit shopping malls, businesses, warehouses, factories, petrol stations, and energy infrastructure in Ukraine, while Russia has also reported attacks on its own territory.
"This winter is going to be the toughest one since the war," said De Croo, expressing grave concern for Ukraine’s vulnerable situation entering winter.
