UN Secretary-General António Guterres affirmed that at this critical juncture in the Middle East, de-escalation must be the top priority. He emphasized:
"All parties must cease any actions harming civilians and ensure humanitarian operations proceed safely without obstruction. Navigational rights and freedoms in and around the Straits of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandab must be fully restored and respected by all, adhering to international law."
Guterres stressed that diplomacy and dialogue are essential going forward and vowed to continue emphasizing this message to leaders worldwide.
He characterized the current global situation as an "era of deep uncertainty" and urged governments to embrace international cooperation to tackle global threats.
Key Points:
- Existential Threats: Guterres identified three significant global challenges: runaway artificial intelligence (AI), the climate crisis, and deepening inequalities.
- Middle East: He called for a two-State solution and highlighted the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza, demanding an end to Israel's annexation of the West Bank.
- Artificial Intelligence: Recognizing AI's potential benefits while acknowledging risks, Guterres urged global cooperation on AI safety, emphasizing that "the world cannot afford a race to the bottom." He referenced the UN's Independent International Scientific Panel on AI for evidence-based discussions.
- Cooperation: The Secretary-General emphasized the necessity of international cooperation, advocating for "guardrails" to make AI safe, transparent, and accountable while prioritizing human dignity.
