UN Declares Kashmir a Disputed Territory on its Standard World Map

The General Assembly approved a resolution to correct maps, with India also supporting it.
New York (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 8th Sep, 2026); The United Nations has declared Kashmir a disputed territory on its standard world map while the General Assembly approved a resolution to correct maps and India also supported it.
According to the report, the resolution adopted by the United Nations backed replacing the traditional Mercator map with the Equal Earth map. India and 163 other countries voted in favor of the UN’s standard Equal Earth map.
The UN’s standard Equal Earth map has exposed the weakness of India‘s narrative that Kashmir is an integral part of the country. On the world map presented by the United Nations, Kashmir was shown as a disputed territory while the Line of Control was marked with a dotted line, once again highlighting Kashmir’s disputed status internationally.
By voting in favor of a world map that shows Kashmir as disputed, India has allegedly buried its so-called integral-part narrative, while its vote at the global forum weakened New Delhi‘s claim that Kashmir is an internal matter of India.
Following domestic criticism, India’s Ministry of External Affairs issued an ambiguous clarification, stating that it supported the map’s geographical proportions, not the borders shown on it. Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry rejected the Indian clarification, saying that the map approved by the United Nations is the one acceptable at the international level and that Kashmir’s disputed status is clear from UN resolutions.
It may be recalled that India has for decades pressured technology companies and international organizations through mapping laws. India‘s vote on the UN’s standard map supports Pakistan‘s principled position on Kashmir.
