UN Warns Of Escalating Violence Against Children, Calls For Strengthening Digital Protection
The UN stated that despite the passage of 20 years since the publication of its study on violence against children and with just four years remaining to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, the world is off track to end violence against children by 2030. The international community must now intensify efforts to ensure children’s safety and well-being.
Key Findings:
- Sexual Violence and Disabilities: The report highlights heightened risks of sexual violence and life-long disabilities among children exposed to such violence.
- Climate Change and Natural Disasters: Climate change acts as a threat multiplier, increasing protection risks for 1.1 billion children globally exposed to multiple climate hazards.
- Digital Environment: The rapid expansion of violence against children in the digital environment is noted, with one out of every three internet users being a child. Digital technologies significantly impact children’s daily lives.
Special Representative’s Efforts:
Since assuming her role in July 2019, Dr. Najat Maalla M’jid, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General on Violence Against Children, has undertaken 65 country visits and engaged with national authorities. She plans to make another 10 visits before the end of 2026. During these engagements, she has met with numerous Heads of State/Government, ministers, and local officials across various sectors.
