Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in New Delhi on Saturday for a one-day visit after seven years and attended the BRICS Summit. Unprecedented security arrangements were made in New Delhi for his visit.

According to an Indian magazine report, Chinese security officials, assisted by Indian personnel, established a security zone around the Taj Palace Hotel.

Xi Jinping stayed at the Taj Palace Hotel, which was declared a no-fly zone.

Counterterrorism and bomb disposal teams remained deployed at the hotel, while special checks were conducted to detect nuclear, radiological and biological threats. Underground pipelines and other installations around the hotel were also inspected.

China transported Xi Jinping’s official limousine, backup vehicle, and communications equipment to India by cargo aircraft around 10 days earlier.

Xi Jinping stayed in India for approximately 24 hours and departed the following morning at around 11 a.m.

The Chinese president travels in a specially modified Boeing 747-8 aircraft equipped with:

  • Secure communications systems
  • Threat-detection equipment
  • Missile-defence protection systems
  • Safeguards against electromagnetic effects

The aircraft is also fitted with an encrypted communications system to keep Xi Jinping in contact with government and military command centres.

According to the Indian magazine, more than 15,000 police personnel and 200 companies of paramilitary forces were deployed across New Delhi ahead of the BRICS Summit. Barricades were erected at various locations and vehicles were searched. More than 700 surveillance cameras and five control rooms were arranged along President Xi Jinping’s route from the airport to Shanti Path.
