Scott Bessent Urges US Partners to Back Iran Sanctions
BBC News reports that US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has called on US allies to support Washington’s efforts to put heavy economic sanctions on Iran. He stated, "We are going to collapse this regime. It is time for our allies and the rest of the world to make a decision."
Bessent made these remarks following US President Donald Trump‘s declaration that nations aiding Iran would face severe economic repercussions.
The US and Israel initiated a conflict with Iran in February, alleging that strikes were aimed at preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons, a claim Tehran has consistently denied. Iran retaliated by blocking the Strait of Hormuz, causing significant price volatility in global markets.
The text highlights the US-Iran ceasefire agreements in April and June, which have been repeatedly violated, and Trump‘s strategy of implementing the "most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country".
Bessent described the upcoming sanctions as "the greatest coordinated economic isolation in the history of the world", warning international trading partners that they will be held accountable if they continue doing business with Iran.
The Iranian economy has been severely affected by decades of international sanctions, leading to protests earlier this year due to rising living costs and inflation. Official data shows a 60% average increase in the price of basic necessities in the 12 months to February 2026.
