Hearts Secure Conference League Spot After Penaltie Victory Over Rapid Vienna
BBC Sport reports that Hearts have come of age, securing a place in the Conference League after defeating Rapid Vienna on penalties. This follows a disappointing end to their previous season with a final-day defeat denying them the Scottish top-flight title.
On 26 August, just three months later, Hearts showcased immense courage and togetherness. The victory marked a turning point, as a new head coach, Wouter Vrancken, along with several player departures and arrivals, had transformed the team’s spirit and performance.
Vrancken praised his team for learning to believe in their abilities:
"They have to learn that they’re a good team… that they can show it."
The Belgian coach noted the change from the previous season, where players were hesitant to take risks or give spaces away. This led to a more confident and assertive performance against Rapid Vienna.
Despite facing tough ties against Sturm Graz and Benfica in earlier rounds, Hearts held their own against Rapid Vienna. After drawing 2-2 in the first leg, the game went into extra time. Calvin Miller’s volley nearly sealed the win for Hearts, but Nenad Cvetkovic leveled for Rapid in the 119th minute.
The match eventually went to penalties, where Hearts’ Beau Reus made a crucial save to deny Moulaye Haidara, securing their place in the Conference League.
