Wales: NHS Gender Surgeries Paused for Review into Referral Numbers
The Welsh Gender Service, based at St David’s Hospital in Cardiff, has paused scheduled and new referrals for gender-affirming surgeries. This decision followed concerns raised by Cardiff and Vale University Health Board about "significantly higher rates of referral" compared to English gender services in the 2025-26 data.
The NHS Wales Joint Commissioning Committee requested an independent clinical review after identifying issues through routine assurance processes. While appointments and hormone therapy support continue, new referrals and surgeries have been paused during the review.
