Wani Urges UNHRC To Revive Self-determination Agenda
ISLAMABAD, (APP – UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – September 10, 2026) The World Muslim Congress has urged the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) to revive a proposal for a separate agenda item on the right to self-determination for peoples living under foreign occupation.
Speaking during an interactive dialogue at the 63rd session of the UNHRC, World Muslim Congress representative Altaf Hussain Wani welcomed the report of the Independent Expert on the Promotion of a Democratic and Equitable International Order.
Wani said a separate agenda item on self-determination would provide peoples under foreign occupation including the people of Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, a formal platform to raise their concerns before the Council, said a press release received here on Thursday.
He recalled former UN Independent Expert Alfred de Zayas’s recommendation for such an agenda item and urged the Independent Expert to support its revival.
Wani said the people of Jammu and Kashmir continued to be denied their right to self-determination despite relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
He stressed that the credibility of the multilateral system depended on protecting the rights of peoples and ensuring their participation in decisions concerning their political future.
