We are all new job starters - here's how we got through the first few days

BBC News explores tips from four recent job starters on navigating their initial days in a new role.

Getting a New Job: Tips for Success

Adjusting to a new job is daunting, especially when it's a position you've long desired. Here, four fresh graduates share their insights on making the transition smoother and thriving during those first few days.

Sarisha Ganesan - Marketing Graduate

Sarisha, 22, from Loughborough University, secured a remote graduate marketing role. To prepare for her start, she proactively reached out to colleagues via email, asking about expectations.

"I was pleasantly surprised by the collaborative work environment," she says. "Coming from university's independent style, I expected less interaction." Sarisha advises openly communicating with your manager and team if you face challenges or feel overwhelmed.

Oliver Walker - Social Media Graduate

Oliver, 23, from the University of Liverpool, started a graduate role at a marketing agency soon after graduation. He recommends focusing on development within your role. On his first day, he requested six-month check-ins with his manager to ensure alignment with career goals.

"I've found interacting with helpful colleagues by attending company events has been valuable," Oliver shares.

Chinaza Eke - Civil Service Intern

Chinaza, 20, a third-year student at the University of Warwick, completed an eight-week civil service internship. She faced unfamiliar software and platforms but initially resisted asking for help, fearing admission of inexperience.

"After a few days, I realized asking for guidance was expected," she says. "Pretending to understand only delays learning."

Remember that everyone starts as a beginner, and adjusting to a new job takes time. Open communication, proactive learning, and embracing support are keys to success.
