Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized that the Constitution of Pakistan protects the fundamental human rights of all citizens. Parliament, he added, is the nation’s central democratic institution, representing the people’s will.
Democratic Principles
In a democratic system, the elected representatives of the people hold power for their welfare. The International Day of Democracy, observed by Pakistan along with the global community, offers a chance to reinforce democracy’s core values: equality, justice, freedom, respect for public opinion, protection of human dignity, and the rule of law.
Constitution’s Role
The Prime Minister explained that the Constitution outlines the relationship between the state and its citizens legally. Article 25 guarantees equal rights for every citizen and equality before the law. It also ensures the dignified status of all federating units, national institutions, and the country’s governance system.
Shehbaz Sharif highlighted the Federal parliamentary democratic system of Pakistan, which empowers legislation in accordance with public interest and Islamic foundations. Framing laws based on public aspirations and needs is a key responsibility of Parliament.
Upholding Democratic Values
To build a prosperous future, he stressed the need to firmly hold onto the basic democratic values that ensure public welfare. The Constitution promotes the full participation of women in all spheres of national life, with reserved seats in federal and provincial legislatures.
Similarly, the state is bound to protect the rights, responsibilities, and interests of minorities, with reserved seats for non-Muslim minorities in federal and provincial legislatures. Pakistan is committed to international responsibilities and democratic principles, actively contributing to promoting democracy, peace, and justice through strong institutions, as part of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
