National Grid and WAPDA Join Forces
Pakistan has made significant progress towards securing affordable, reliable, and environmentally friendly electricity by 2040, as evidenced by a national workshop organized by the LUMS Energy Institute. The event presented proposals to repurpose thermal power plants to support the grid, considering the increasing adoption of renewable energy.
Expert Insights and Roadmap
Experts offered a roadmap detailing the technical potential and required policy and regulatory measures. High-level participants from the power sector, thermal power plants, industries, research centers, and universities attended the workshop.
LUMS Presentation
Representing LUMS, Dr. Salman Rafiq Chaudhry and Engineer Umar Farooq outlined the institution's research and practical priorities for the transition to renewable energy.
Technical Session
During the technical session, participants discussed converting suitable thermal generators into synchronous condensers. Industry representatives expressed interest but emphasized the need for project-specific technical and economic assessments.
Policy Discussion
In the policy session, Adviser to the Energy Minister Syed Faizan Ali Shah, National Grid Company MD Engineer Altaf Hussain Malik, PPMC MD Abid Latif Lodhi, ISMO's Umar Haroon Malik, and WAPDA's Muhammad Irfan Miana discussed a competitive framework for ancillary services.
Dr. Fayyaz Ahmed Chaudhry noted that the consultations' priorities would be translated into actionable steps, with LUMS publishing the results, including preliminary assessments, later in the year.
