Urdu poet Ada Jafri is being remembered on her birth anniversary today (August 22), for her pioneering contribution to Urdu literature. Born in 1924, she is celebrated as the "First Lady of Urdu Poetry" and a trailblazer for female voices in modern Urdu poetry.

Ada Jafri’s early life was marked by a passion for literature, which she nurtured through extensive reading and writing despite societal restrictions. She began publishing her poetry in literary journals under the pseudonym "Ada Badayuni." After marriage, she adopted the name Ada Jafri.

Her work introduced a distinct feminine perspective to Urdu literature, characterized by personal experiences, emotional depth, and lyrical elegance. Notable collections include Main Saaz Dhoondti Rahi, Shahr-e-Dard, and Ghazalan Tum To Waqif Ho. Ada Jafri also penned her autobiography, Jo Rahi So Bekhabari Rahi, and contributed significantly to Urdu literary research and editing.

Her accolades include the Hamdard Foundation’s Outstanding Female Poet of the Century award (1955), Adamjee Literary Award (1967), Tamgha-e-Imtiaz (1981), Baba-e-Urdu Dr Maulvi Abdul Haq Award (1994), and Quaid-e-Azam Literary Award (1997). The Government of Pakistan honored her with the Pride of Performance, a prestigious award.

Ada Jafri passed away in 2015, but her poetry continues to inspire, serving as a testament to her courage and commitment to literature. Her birth anniversary is an occasion to recognize this literary giant whose work opened doors for women poets in Urdu.
