Shah, known for his substantial assets valued at INR 33.83 billion, temporarily set aside his political identity and privileges. He embraced the role of a beggar in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar area, interacting with locals without his usual security or lavish surroundings.
According to Indian media reports, he stayed away from his guards, vehicles, and valuables. He relied on public kindness, asking for help and accepting food from strangers while sitting by the roadside.
A Testimony of Human Nature
This unconventional experiment was a personal journey undertaken at the suggestion of his Jain spiritual guide, Namramuni. The current Jain religious period inspired Shah to step outside his comfort zone. He donned makeup to conceal his identity, merging seamlessly into Mumbai’s bustling streets as a beggar.
Reflecting on his experience, Shah noted the striking contrast in people’s behavior. "This is the reality of life," he observed. He found that his political status significantly influenced interactions. When unknown to them, people were more inclined to offer assistance without hesitation.
Shah specifically highlighted the warmth and generosity of Mumbai residents. One individual offered him INR 20 with the words, "Go, Baba, have something to eat." He also received a complimentary samosa from a vendor after explaining his predicament.
The legislator spent time in this guise, engaging with locals, and later removed his makeup to interact with the same people as himself. This allowed him to compare reactions, revealing how social status can sway public perception.

Prag Shah, a wealthy political leader in Maharashtra, gained prominence for his considerable assets, declared at over INR 33.83 billion in his 2024 election affidavit. This experiment, however, showcased a different side of him—one focused on human connection and empathy rather than wealth and status.
