OTTAWA, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News / WAM – 23rd Aug, 2026) Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada will impose tariffs on certain US imports in response to new 50 percent tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump, following the collapse of trade talks between the two neighboring countries.

The new US tariffs target a wide range of sectors, including furniture, dairy products, cement, clothing, fishing equipment, and hockey gear, covering approximately US$20 billion worth of Canadian exports across the southern border.

Carney stated at a press conference that Canada would respond to Washington’s new tariffs on a dollar-for-dollar basis to protect Canadian workers, farmers, families, and businesses. He further added that Canada would announce support measures for sectors affected by the new US tariffs, alongside the introduction of new tariffs on imports from the United States.

Key Points:

  • Canada to impose tariffs on US imports worth US$20 billion.
  • Response to US President Trump’s 50% tariffs.
  • Protectionist measures to safeguard Canadian industries and jobs.
