Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney has stated that a new wave of US tariffs on Canada is a "miscalculation" aimed at "hurt[ing] and dividi[ng] us", following the collapse of trade talks late on Friday.
Carney explained his decision to walk away from a potential deal, attributing it to unwillingness to "compromise Canada’s sovereignty". He added that the US requested too much and offered too little.
In response, Canada will match US tariffs "dollar-for-dollar" starting September 8th, encompassing levies on steel, dairy, appliances, and electronics. President Donald Trump has yet to comment publicly.
The prime minister’s speech on Saturday is his first address to Canadians since he announced the breakdown of talks on Friday night. He accused the US of making "last-minute changes" that were "unfair" and "uneconomic". Conversely, US negotiators blamed Canada for introducing "new demands and walk backs" on previously agreed terms.
