Capt. (Retd.) Mahmood Gets Additional Charge as Federal Health Secretary
ISLAMABAD, (APP – UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 26th Aug, 2026) Capt. (Retd.) Muhammad Mahmood, a BS-21 officer of the Pakistan Administrative Service, has been assigned the additional charge of Secretary, National Health Services, Regulation and Coordination Division. This appointment comes after Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif directed the suspension of Health Secretary Aslam Ghauri.
Mahmood, currently posted as Secretary, Housing and Works Division, will hold this additional charge for a period of three months or until a regular incumbent is appointed, whichever comes first, according to a notification from the Cabinet Secretariat, Establishment Division.
Separately, a notice suspending Muhammad Aslam Ghauri, a BS-22 officer of the Secretariat Group and serving as Secretary of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination Division, has been issued by the Establishment Division. The suspension is for an initial period of 120 days under Rule 5 of the Civil Servants (Efficiency and Discipline) Rules 2020, with immediate effect.
Earlier, during an emergency meeting regarding the deaths of children in a fire incident at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), the prime minister expressed his outrage and ordered strict action. The prime minister suspended Ghauri and asked him to leave the meeting, according to a press release from the PM Office Media Wing.
He also offered his condolences to the parents of the newborns who perished in the tragic fire at PIMS hospital’s nursery and prayed for patience for the grieving families.
The prime minister characterized the incident as "deeply heartbreaking" and stated that the government shared the grief of the bereaved parents. A high-level committee, headed by former interior secretary Shahid Khan, was formed to investigate the matter.
