Manchester United: Carrick Future Under Major Threat
By Gary Rose, BBC Sport journalist
Michael Carrick's position as Manchester United manager is hanging by a thread following the team's 3-0 home loss to Bournemouth on Sunday.
The Red Devils' poor start to the season, with just one win in eight Premier League matches, has left them 16th, 14 points off the top.
Carrick, 45, was appointed permanent manager in May after a successful interim spell, but recent results have raised serious doubts about his future.
"It's a tough situation," Carrick acknowledged. "What's next, I really don't know. I will always do my best for the club and I won't change that now."
Carrick's Difficult Decision
On Sunday, Carrick made a bold move by benching his captain, Bruno Fernandes, following the latter's criticism of the club's tactics and hierarchy. This decision came after defender Lisandro Martinez also expressed disappointment with the club's investment in the squad.
Carrick, a former United player with 464 appearances, remains popular among fans who sang his song during the Bournemouth defeat. He expressed mixed emotions, acknowledging the tough spell his players are going through and thanking the supporters for their support.
"The situation is where we are, and we haven't had results or performances good enough," he added.
Gary Neville's Take
Former United defender Gary Neville, also on Sky Sports, echoed the growing sentiment: "The Manchester United fans are singing the Michael Carrick song because I think they know what's going to happen here. They've seen this before."
