MOSCOW-KYIV, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News / WAM – 23rd Aug, 2026)

Russia and Ukraine witnessed a fresh escalation over the past several hours, with the Russian Ministry of Defence claiming to have intercepted and destroyed 328 Ukrainian drones overnight across various regions, including Crimea, and the Black and Azov seas.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian authorities reported intense Russian attacks on cities like Kharkiv, Izium, and Mykolaiv, utilizing guided bombs and drones, resulting in civilian casualties and damage to numerous residential buildings and infrastructure. Two civilians were killed and several others injured in the border region of Sumy due to explosive devices.

On the battlefield, the Ukrainian General Staff stated that 197 combat engagements occurred along the front lines over the past 24 hours, highlighting significant losses sustained by Russian forces in personnel and military equipment since the conflict’s inception.

These developments followed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s declaration to respond to Kyiv’s targeting of Russian economic infrastructure by striking Ukraine’s "most sensitive economic sectors." He also expressed Moscow’s openness to peace talks based on "realities on the ground."

Germany, through Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, announced additional humanitarian aid for Ukraine, including €50 million, along with €10 million for NATO’s Comprehensive Assistance Package to support winter preparations and €3 million for Ukrainian veterans, during a joint press conference with his Ukrainian counterpart, Andrii Sybiha, in Kyiv.
