Face to Provide Financial Support for Selected SAU Student Projects
Sindh Agriculture University (SAU) and the Food Security and Agriculture Centre of Excellence (FACE) have agreed to collaborate on student-led commercial projects, vermicomposting training for local women, and the Agriculture and Food Security Innovation Challenge (AFSIC-2026), with FACE offering financial support for selected initiatives.
Collaboration and Implementation
During a meeting between FACE representative Muhammad Ahmed and SAU Vice Chancellor Engr. Prof. Dr Altaf Ali Siyal, they discussed joint research and project implementation involving university experts, students, and local women. The SAU Registrar Ghulam Mohiuddin Qureshi and Advisor/Director of the Office of Research, Innovation, and Commercialization (ORIC) Dr Aasia Akber Panhwer were also present.
Potential Areas of Cooperation
The meeting explored potential collaborations under AFSIC-2026, an initiative encouraging students, faculty members, and researchers to propose practical and research-based solutions to current agricultural and food security challenges. Proposed areas include:
- Climate-smart agriculture
- Food security
- Efficient water management
- Agricultural mechanization
- Data-driven farming
- Post-harvest technologies and food loss prevention
- Value addition
- Soil health restoration
- Sustainable agricultural practices
Student Innovation Component
Under the student innovation component, FACE will receive five commercially promising project proposals from SAU students. Two projects will be selected for financial support, with an investment ceiling of Rs20 million.
Women's Vermicomposting Initiative
A women-focused initiative was also discussed, where SAU experts will train local women in vermicomposting with FACE's support. This initiative aims to provide income-generating opportunities for participating women, potentially earning them between Rs20,000 and Rs35,000 based on the activity's scale and success.
Discussion Points
The meeting covered project eligibility, financial assistance, disbursement mechanisms, proposal evaluation criteria, institutional responsibilities, procurement procedures, intellectual property rights, commercialization, monitoring, and the possibility of signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between SAU and FACE.
Dr Altaf Siyal welcomed the collaboration, emphasizing the significance of partnerships among universities, industry, and institutions in translating academic research into practical solutions for Pakistan's agriculture sector.
Dr Panhwer stated that ORIC will coordinate technical consultations and facilitate future joint activities between SAU and FACE.
