FULDATAL, Germany (Sumaira FH): Building up drone-defence capabilities will be a permanent task for Germany in the coming years, according to Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt.
Speaking during a visit to the Federal Police’s aviation unit in the central town of Fuldatal, Dobrindt predicted an "arms race" between the force’s own drone-defence systems and opponents trying to overcome them.
Currently, the federal police’s new drone-defence unit, commissioned in December, has 70 personnel. This number is expected to grow to 300 officers by year’s end.
The expansion follows a serious drone incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport earlier this month. A drone fitted with explosives and a detonation mechanism was discovered on August 4 within the airport’s security zone. The Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office described it as a "serious attack" on Germany’s transport and logistics infrastructure.
