Body recovered in search for man fallen overboard on cruise ship

BBC News reports on a tragic incident involving a man who fell overboard from a cruise ship in the North Sea off the east coast of Scotland.

A body has been recovered during the search operation for the missing man, who was reported absent from the Ambassador Cruise Lines vessel MS Ambition at 08:35. The ship was approximately 36 nautical miles from Arbroath at the time.

The search involved lifeboats, coastguard crews, and aerial support, all launched before the ship docked in Dundee. Police Scotland confirmed the recovery of a body but noted that formal identification is still pending, with the missing man’s family having been notified.

The ship was returning to Dundee from a solar eclipse cruise, with stops in Iceland and the Faroe Islands, after docking in Lerwick. The passenger’s luggage remained on board, and his bed was found unoccupied.

Onboard passengers were initially delayed from disembarking but were eventually permitted to leave the ship around 11:30.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland stated:

"Around 8.55am on Friday, 21 August, 2026, we received a report that a man had gone overboard from a cruise ship in the North Sea. A search and rescue operation… has been ongoing and a body has been recovered."

The MS Ambition had previously been chartered by the Scottish government to provide temporary housing for Ukrainian refugees.
