Greece Reports 157 West Nile Virus Cases, 13 Deaths
Greece has recorded 157 cases of West Nile virus since the beginning of the year, with 13 deaths following infection, according to health authorities. As of Wednesday, this number has nearly quadrupled within weeks, as reported by Greece’s EODY public health agency. At the end of July, only 42 cases had been reported.
West Nile virus is transmitted by mosquitoes. Most infections cause no symptoms or only mild illness, while severe cases can occur primarily in older people and those with underlying health conditions.
The surge in Greece mirrors similar trends in other parts of Southern Europe, where increased West Nile virus infections have been noted.
