Hedgehog among four animals chosen to feature on new banknotes

Bank of England Reveals New Banknote Animals

BBC News reports that the Bank of England is introducing a new series of banknotes featuring four UK animals:

  • Atlantic Puffin (to celebrate marine life and the coastline)
  • Barn Owl
  • Buff-tailed Bumblebee (the clear winner in the public vote)
  • European Hedgehog

These creatures were chosen from a shortlist of 18 nominated animals, after more than 2.5 million votes cast by 478,531 people. The Bank aims to enhance security with these new designs, while showcasing the UK's wildlife diversity.

The notes will feature these central images alongside other natural elements on £5, £10, £20, and £50 denominations. The monarch will remain on the reverse side. The design process, including testing and printing, could take several years, with more details to be unveiled closer to launch.

While wildlife is already present on UK banknotes through institutions like the Royal Bank of Scotland, this marks a significant shift as notable historical figures are replaced by animals.
