Trump wants a new Camp David retreat at his posh Florida golf club

Trump Proposes New Camp David-Style Retreat at Florida Golf Club

President Trump has revealed his plan to create a new presidential retreat, modeled after Camp David, at his luxurious Florida golf club.

According to Trump, the club would cover the construction costs as a "gift" to Americans and offer free memberships to future presidents, along with accommodation for visiting foreign dignitaries. "It's only about two minutes away from the airport... and they could spend the weekend there, like a retreat, like a sort of Camp David retreat," he stated on Wednesday.

This proposal would represent a significant departure from the traditional Camp David, a rustic retreat once a Great Depression-era camp for federal employees. If realized, Trump's golf estate would offer a stark contrast to its wooded counterpart.

The US president has previously sought to leave his mark on the White House, making changes such as adding gilded gold leaf accents to the Oval Office, demolishing the East Wing, and constructing a ballroom. He is also pushing for a massive triumphal arch in Washington.

Camp David, located in Catoctin Mountain Park in Maryland, has been used for national security meetings and other events, known as the president's country residence. The facility, officially the Naval Support Facility, Thurmont, is guarded by the US Navy and Marine Corps.

Due to its secure nature, Camp David remains largely hidden from public view, with Marines patrolling the perimeter and airspace restricted. The location is not marked on maps, even among locals. Press access is rare, making photography of the cabins and lodges that make up the retreat tightly controlled.
