Learner Drivers Turn to YouTube and TikTok to Cut Costs—But Instructors Warn of Risks

BBC News reports on a trend among learner drivers in the UK who are turning to YouTube and TikTok videos to help them learn to drive on a budget. However, driving instructors caution that while these online resources can be beneficial, they should be used in conjunction with practical lessons due to the serious nature of road safety.

Cost of Learning to Drive in the UK

The average cost of driving lessons in the UK now ranges from £35 to £50, with learners typically needing 45 hours of instruction and an additional 22 hours of practice, according to the RAC.

Benefits and Concerns

Megan Kielthy, who passed her driving test in August, credits social media videos for saving her money. She shared that she found the content helpful, but also encountered AI-generated images and misinformation that could potentially confuse learners.

Betsi Seward, an 18-year-old learner driver, echoed Megan's sentiments, noting the prevalence of driving-related content on her social media feeds. While she finds the videos helpful, she acknowledges that not all content is accurate.

Instructor Warnings

The Driving Instructors Association (DIA) emphasizes that while digital education can be excellent, it should not replace practical lessons entirely. They highlight the importance of road safety, which is a "matter of life and death."

Financial Challenges

The total cost of learning to drive in the UK is approximately £2,460, a significant increase of more than £570 since 2020 (DIA). Learners must also cover expenses for theory tests (£23), practical tests (£65), and temporary driving insurance in personal cars, which can cost £40-£50 per month.
