Lena Dunham Welcomes First Child via Surrogacy
British Broadcasting Corporation announces that Lena Dunham has welcomed her first child, a daughter, through surrogacy. The Girls creator shared this news in an op-ed published by Vogue on Wednesday, expressing her joy and gratitude.
Dunham, who turned 40 this year, has been open about her struggles with fertility and chronic illness, including endometriosis, which led to a hysterectomy at age 31. In her op-ed, she recounts meeting her surrogate for the first time:
"While I've been known to make friends quickly - airport terminals, veterinary offices - this was the quickest leap from first coffee to gynecological procedure I'd ever done."
She describes the emotional moment she met her daughter, who arrived during a solar eclipse and meteor shower, as a "glimpse of this person... waiting with something related to patience, but also none at all."
Dunham has previously written about her long journey to parenthood in her memoir Famesick, published in April 2026. She detailed the difficult process of extracting her eggs during the pandemic and the emotional rollercoaster that followed.
This new development comes after Dunham told The Times in June 2025 that she and her husband Luis Felber were "in the process of expanding our family in new ways," without revealing further details.
