Modern Reforms in Punjab's Emergency Services: A Vision for Safety

Emergency measures are being implemented to enhance fire safety across Punjab, with a particular focus on high-rise buildings. During a press conference, Provincial Health and Emergency Services Minister Khawaja Salman Rafique outlined these initiatives along with other significant reforms under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif's vision.
Present at the event was Secretary Emergency Services Punjab, Dr Rizwan Naseer, and other officials.
Rafique began by lighting candles in memory of those lost in the Baldia Town tragedy in Karachi and the Bund Road incident in Lahore. He emphasized the importance of modern reforms in the Emergency Services Department, aligning with Sharif's vision.
Key Announcements:
- Fire Safety Compliance: All high-rise buildings in Punjab have until September 30th to adhere to safety Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Non-compliance will result in building sealing and strict penalties for owners.
- INSARAG Certification: The United Nations has granted INSARAG certification to Pakistan's Emergency Services, a significant achievement and source of pride.
- Ambulance Expansion: 256 additional ambulances have been introduced to improve emergency medical services.
- Training Initiatives: Over 441,000 teachers and students in Punjab's educational institutions have received fire safety training, while more than 170,000 scouts have also been trained.
- Equipment Upgrades: Rescue 1122 has been equipped with modern gear worth billions of rupees to enhance its responsiveness during emergencies.
- Hospital Safety: Fire safety equipment and hydrants have been installed in Punjab's government teaching hospitals.
Dr Rizwan Naseer noted that September 11th is observed globally to commemorate the firefighters who lost their lives on 9/11, with 340 firefighters among the victims.
