Punjab Forms Technical Working Group To Review Purchase Of Disposable Medical Items

LAHORE, (APP – UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 23rd Aug, 2026) Secretary Specialized Healthcare and Medical Education has constituted a technical working group to review the procurement process for disposable medical items for tertiary care hospitals across Punjab.

The first meeting of the technical working group was held on Sunday, where experts held detailed consultations on the technical specifications and certification requirements of various disposable items. The meeting particularly reviewed certification requirements for invasive and non-invasive medical items. The experts emphasized that strict quality and safety standards are essential for items intended for use inside patients’ bodies.

In light of the recommendations made during the meeting, the Health Department has approached the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) for its input. The working group also recommended that cases involving fake documents should be dealt with under the Punjab Procurement Rules 2014 after receiving DRAP’s response.

The working group will formulate its final recommendations after receiving the response from DRAP. These recommendations will cover:

  • Bidding documents
  • The list of items to be procured
  • Technical specifications and evaluation criteria

The committee will also review the existing evaluation criteria, bidding documents, technical specifications and price estimates. It will examine the list and quantities of items proposed for procurement and coordinate with relevant regulatory authorities wherever required.

Professor Dr. Syed Asghar Naqi, Professor of Surgery at King Edward Medical University Lahore, has been appointed convener of the technical working group. The members include:

  • Principal Allama Iqbal Medical College/Jinnah Hospital Professor Dr. Tayyaba Waseem
  • Principal Sargodha Medical College Sargodha, Executive Director Punjab Institute of Cardiology Lahore, Executive Director Rawalpindi Institute of Cardiology, Additional Secretary Technical SHC & ME Department, Professor Dr. Rana Farooq of Jinnah Hospital, Professor Dr. Muhammad Anis (Nephrology), Professor Dr. Nazarat Sohail (Gynecology), Medical Superintendent Services Hospital Lahore, Dr. Ali Sabtain (Anesthesia), Amber Iqbal Khan (Deputy Drug Controller Mayo Hospital Lahore), and Kiran Naz (Deputy Drug Controller Services Hospital).

The technical working group has been directed to submit its recommendations within seven days.
