Royal Mail Misses Delivery Targets Again but Hails ‘Encouraging’ Signs
BBC News reports that Royal Mail has once again missed its delivery targets for first and second-class post, despite claiming progress in their turnaround plan.
The postal service delivered:
- 85% of first-class deliveries the next day between March and June, up from 76% in the same period last year, but still below regulator Ofcom’s 90% target.
- 91% of second-class mail within three days, an improvement from the previous year, though short of Ofcom’s 95% goal.
Royal Mail attributes these results to their "encouraging" improvements and the impact of their turnaround plan.
Jamie Stephenson, Chief Operating Officer, noted: "These results are encouraging… while First Class performance is well ahead of where we expected…" He also mentioned a £500 million investment plan over five years, aiming to meet Ofcom’s delivery targets by May 2027.
However, the postal service continues to face criticism and investigations from Ofcom for missed targets, as well as allegations from employees of concealing mail to appear on-target.
