Tarar Says PIMS Fire A Deeply Painful Tragedy

ISLAMABAD, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 28th Aug, 2026)

Federal Minister for Law and Justice, Azam Nazeer Tarar, on Friday described the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) incident as a deeply painful tragedy, stating that the entire nation was saddened by the loss of lives.

Speaking in the National Assembly, he mentioned that Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif had promptly constituted two committees to investigate the causes of the tragic fire and recommend measures to prevent future occurrences. He assured that the government was dedicated to uncovering the factors leading to this incident.

The minister revealed that a former interior secretary, a highly respected official, had been appointed to lead the inquiry and was given two days to submit an interim report. This report was expected by Friday evening, and its contents would be shared publicly. Additionally, a detailed report was required within seven days, upon which appropriate actions would be taken based on the committee’s recommendations.

Tarar further informed that another four-member committee, headed by Dr Azhar Kiyani, had been established to review PIMS's overall condition and needs. This committee included a retired professor of medicine, a former civil servant, and another expert. He noted that this body had been designated as an administrative management oversight committee and was tasked with submitting its report within seven days.

Expressing his sympathy to the families affected by the tragedy, Tarar emphasized that no words could adequately convey the nation's grief and solidarity. He encouraged lawmakers to set aside political narratives and instead present practical suggestions in the National Assembly to prevent similar incidents in the future.

"We are all Pakistanis, and in one way or another, parents of children," he said, emphasizing the importance of focusing on reforms and measures to ensure such tragedies don't recur.
