Ludek Miklosko Obituary: West Ham Goalkeeper Whose Fans Still Chant His Name
BBC Sport reports on the passing of Ludek Miklosko, a beloved former West Ham goalkeeper, who died at the age of 64.
‘Big Ludo’ – a cult figure at the club, known for his impressive performances and the affectionate chant still sung by West Ham fans today:
"My name is Ludo Miklosko,
I come from near Moscow,
I play in goal for West Ham (West Ham!),
When I walk down the street,
Everyone that I meet,
Says "Oi! Big boy! What’s your name?"
Miklosko, diagnosed with cancer in 2021, announced his decision to stop further treatment in 2024. He returned to West Ham for a Premier League match against Liverpool, receiving a hero’s welcome.
Born in Prostejov, Czechoslovakia (near London), Miklosko became the first footballer from his country to move to England after the fall of communism. He joined West Ham in 1990, signing for £300,000 from Czech club Banik Ostrava.
Despite initial difficulties adjusting to life in England, Miklosko became a cult hero, making 374 appearances for the Hammers over eight years. He was known for his brilliant performances, including a memorable match against Manchester United in 1995, which denied Alex Ferguson’s side the Premier League title.
Miklosko ended his playing career at Queens Park Rangers, later returning to West Ham as goalkeeping coach. He was awarded the Hammer of the Year in 1991 as the club won promotion.
His international career included 42 caps for Czechoslovakia and later the Czech Republic.
