New York, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 22nd Sep, 2026) – The United States, Denmark and Greenland have signed a major agreement allowing an increased US military presence in Greenland. According to a US newspaper, the agreement was reached on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session in New York and differs from President Donald Trump’s demand to make Greenland a formal US territory to counter growing Russian and Chinese activity in the Arctic region.
This agreement represents a middle ground reached after Greenlandic leaders opposed complete US control. Under its terms, the United States is permitted to increase its military presence in the region. The newspaper reported that the agreement allows the US to establish a "Golden Dome" defense system in Greenland aimed at countering ballistic missile threats.
The shortest route from Europe to North America passes through the Arctic island.
Before the signing ceremony, President Trump told world leaders at the United Nations that the agreement gives the United States permanent control over security and all other necessities in the area. He stated that no US rival would be allowed to establish a military presence in Greenland or make sensitive investments there without Washington’s explicit written approval.
President Trump, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen signed the agreement at a trilateral ceremony following Trump’s speech at the UN General Assembly. Frederiksen described the agreement as a step that "could last forever" and emphasized the importance of the NATO alliance while fully respecting Greenland’s right to self-determination.
