World Trade & Tech Day: AI and Trade Increasingly Intertwined

GENEVA (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News / WAM – 15th Sep, 2026) Hundreds of participants gathered at the WTO for World Trade & Tech Day on Monday, September 14, a clear indication of how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping cross-border commerce.
Under the theme "AI and Trade: Turning Potential into Progress," the event featured a full day of panel discussions and knowledge-sharing sessions aimed at fostering conversations around technology and trade. The initiative brought together government leaders, academics, and private sector representatives to explore ways to leverage AI’s potential for tangible economic gains and inclusive growth.
As noted by WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, "The AI revolution promises to transform the way we trade, by lowering trade costs and enhancing productivity growth, especially in services. Trade is the backbone of the AI value chain, from cross-border data flows to critical minerals."
AI and trade growth have gone hand in hand, according to the Director-General. She highlighted that global goods trade volume increased by 4.6% last year, with an estimated 42% of this growth attributed to trade in AI-related products. "Trade is the backbone of the AI supply chain," she added.
The Ministerial Dialogue, which kicked off the day, featured ministers from several small economies who expressed optimism about how AI can aid their countries’ productivity. The session shed light on successful cases where AI has enabled smaller nations to compete globally, particularly in the services sector.
