Ahsan Iqbal Stresses Teacher Training and Curriculum Reform for World-Class Citizens

Ahsan Iqbal, Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives, emphasized the importance of comprehensive reforms in both curriculum and teacher training on Friday. He aimed to prepare students for modern global demands, encouraging teachers to move beyond traditional lecture-based teaching methods.

During his address at the National Institute of Excellence in Teacher Education (NIETE)’s Mission Control Center, Iqbal highlighted that successful curriculum reform hinges on teachers’ capacity to adapt to new era requirements. He advocated for a reform that fosters creativity by promoting curiosity, inquiry, and critical thinking among students.

The minister cited Quranic teachings, emphasizing the value of observation, reflection, and intellect in knowledge acquisition. He noted that Muslim civilization historically thrived due to its tradition of inquiry and intellectual curiosity, calling for an education system that nurtures "book owners" rather than "bookworms."

Iqbal stressed the role of teachers in making education engaging and meaningful. He suggested that teachers should not only impart academic knowledge but also contribute to character-building and civic responsibility, ensuring students’ overall development.

Referring to curriculum reforms initiated during 2017-18, Iqbal expressed concern over findings indicating a significant weakening of the curriculum upon his return to office. He identified shortcomings in social studies textbooks, including inadequate coverage of the Mughal period, Pakistan’s industrial development, science, and innovation. Iqbal argued that the new curriculum should accurately represent Pakistan’s history and achievements while preparing students for future economic and technological needs.
