Formula 1: Kimi Antonelli – The Boy ‘Born in a Garage’ and Made on the Track
BBC Sport explores the rise of Kimi Antonelli, described as a driver "born in a garage" who is now dominating this year’s F1 championship in only his second season.
A Tale of Early Beginnings
Marco Antonelli, Kimi’s father, first realized his son’s potential when he was just 10 years old. While at the Adria circuit in Italy, Marco asked Kimi if he wanted to drive his Lamborghini, to which Kimi enthusiastically responded.
On that day, they took to the track with Marco at the wheel and Kimi controlling the rest. Despite not being able to see the track due to Kimi’s helmet, Marco was amazed by his son’s skill in handling the car at high speeds.
Nurturing a Passion
Kimi’s passion for racing began from a very young age. Marco recalls:
"Kimi from 15 days old was in the garage and heard the sound of the engine and the smell of the exhaust."
Even as a toddler, Kimi would enjoy sitting on his father’s leg while he operated a racing simulator, demonstrating his natural talent for driving.
From Garage to Track
Despite Marco’s initial reluctance due to his own career struggles, he eventually supported his son’s dream. He acknowledges that Kimi’s path was not easy and that his success is a testament to his hard work and dedication.
"Sometimes you are fast but not in the right position to become a professional driver."
Now, Kimi is reaping the rewards of his early start, showcasing an extraordinary talent that has left the F1 world in awe.
