ASEAN Committee in Islamabad Celebrates 59th ASEAN Day
The ASEAN Committee in Islamabad (ACI) celebrated the 59th Anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) with an evening reception, bringing together various stakeholders. This event showcased the unity, diversity, and cultural richness among the member states.
A Celebration of Six Decades
The celebration marked nearly six decades since ASEAN’s establishment on 8 August 1967. It highlighted the Association’s commitment to cooperation, friendship, and shared prosperity. The theme, "Navigating Our Future, Together," reflects ASEAN’s collective approach to global challenges and opportunities.
Keynote Address by Ambassador Fernandez
In his welcome remarks, H.E. Dr. Emmanuel R. Fernandez, Ambassador of the Republic of the Philippines and ACI Chair, emphasized ASEAN’s strengths, including its diverse cultures, languages, and political systems, which have fostered a strong tradition of peace, dialogue, and cooperation. He also noted the region’s economic dynamism, openness to partnerships, and the potential of its young, educated population.
Attendance and Felicitations
The event was attended by Federal Minister for National Heritage and Culture, H.E. Aurangzeb Khan Khichi, who conveyed warm felicitations from the Government and people of Pakistan to the ASEAN member states. Minister Khichi recognized ASEAN’s transformation into a dynamic community with a combined economy approaching US$4 trillion.
He also highlighted Pakistan’s long-standing engagement with ASEAN and the potential for further cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
