Asylum Seekers Told Rape and Harassment Illegal in UK in New Home Office Booklet

The Home Office has published a nine-page online booklet for new arrivals, detailing various aspects of life in the UK, including respect, sex and consent, and gender equality. The guidance aims to educate asylum seekers about UK laws and customs that may differ from their home countries.

According to the booklet, asylum seekers must understand UK law to avoid consequences such as police involvement, loss of support, or negative impact on their asylum claim. It specifically highlights that:

  • Gender Equality: Women in the UK enjoy equal rights to men, and do not require permission from male relatives to engage in activities like working, studying, traveling, or making decisions.

  • Sex and Consent: Both parties must consent to any sexual activity. Consent cannot be given if an individual is asleep, drunk, or unable to respond. Rape is defined as having sex with someone who does not want to, even if they agreed once or are married/in a relationship.

  • Respect in Public: Actions like whistling or making kissing noises at people on the street, or making sexual comments, are not acceptable.

The Home Office emphasizes that anyone breaking UK law, including asylum seekers, "will face consequences." They also highlight the high number of deportations and returns of failed asylum seekers under the current government.

Remember that any asylum seekers breaking UK law should be deported, according to Conservative Party statements. Reform has criticized the publication, stating it shows the government’s awareness of asylum seekers as a "menace."
