Bishop Diocese of Peshawar Regrets Desecration of Christian Worship Place

Bishop Humphrey Sarfraz Peter, Diocese of Peshawar, expressed regret over the desecration of a Christian worship place and accused the district administration and police of facilitating a group led by a self-proclaimed "Commissar Bishop."

During a press conference at the Peshawar Press Club, accompanied by senior lawyer Moazam Butt, Bishop Peter alleged that despite a valid court stay order, provincial authorities allowed a disputed group to enter diocese offices, damaging CCTV cameras and recording equipment, and occupying the premises. He also claimed that locks at St John’s Cathedral Church Peshawar were broken with bricks and iron rods.

Bishop Peter emphasized that the Diocese of Peshawar is responsible for supervising and protecting Christian properties in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa through an authorized representative of the Lahore Diocesan Trust Association. He stressed that the offices and church buildings allegedly damaged during the operation belonged to the Trust Association and no one had the authority to determine their use.

He urged the Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Chief Minister KP, Chief Justice Peshawar High Court, Chief Secretary KP, and Inspector General Police to take immediate notice of the alleged desecration and forcible entry into the diocese premises. Senior lawyer Moazam Butt demanded an independent investigation into the incident and legal protection for the legitimate Diocese of Peshawar, as well as action against those who facilitated the group’s entry.
