Closer to Retiring than Changing Teams: Why Max Verstappen Stayed at Red Bull
BBC Sport reports on Max Verstappen‘s decision to extend his contract with Red Bull until 2030.
Verstappen, a four-time champion, had been facing existential questions about his future in F1, prompted by:
- New Engine Regulations: The transition to hybrid engines, which introduced energy recovery systems, left him questioning his enjoyment of the sport.
- Career Path: He contemplated retiring versus pursuing a potential change of teams.
His announcement, however, puts these doubts to rest, particularly regarding his preference for staying within his familiar Red Bull environment.
Verstappen’s dissatisfaction stemmed from the new engines’ constant energy recovery demands, which felt artificial and hindered performance. He questioned:
"Is it worth it? Or do I enjoy being more at home with my family? Seeing my friends more when you’re not enjoying your sport?"
By 2028, the internal combustion engine’s dominance will increase, potentially alleviating some of these concerns.
Verstappen, a purist, craves the pure driving experience, which the current regulations seemed to undermine. His experience driving a Red Bull-branded Mercedes at the Nurburgring 24 Hours further solidified his passion for traditional racing.
The drivers’ collective feedback has been heard, signaling a potential shift in F1’s approach to engine regulations.
