Como Bans ‘Beasts’ in City Centre
The mayor of Como, Alessandro Rapinese, has implemented a ban on bicycle riding in specific areas of the historic Italian city, citing safety concerns after he was hit by an electric bike.
From September, cyclists will be required to dismount in approximately 30 streets within the city centre. Rapinese shared his personal experience, stating, "People act based on their own experiences, and I know what it’s like to be hit by one of these beasts."
This decision is part of a comprehensive package of new traffic regulations, establishing a Limited Traffic Zone (ZTL) to manage increasing tourism. The measures include stricter rules for cars and vans in the city centre.
While the ban applies to both electric and traditional bicycles, as the Italian highway code does not differentiate, it has sparked controversy. Locals and citizen groups have expressed dissent, with an online petition launched to block the resolution.
