Gillani Calls For Equal Women’s Participation To Unlock Pakistan’s Full Economic Potential
ISLAMABAD, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 9th Sep, 2026) Acting President Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani on Wednesday stated that Pakistan's democratic strength, economic progress, and social cohesion cannot be fully achieved unless women participate equally in shaping the nation's institutions, economy, and future.
"If the country is to unlock its full economic potential, we must ensure that women are not only beneficiaries of development but also active drivers as entrepreneurs, professionals, policymakers, innovators, and leaders," he emphasized while addressing the Pakistan Women Leadership and Policy Summit 2026, organized by the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) at their building.
Gillani noted the summit's significance in bringing together two crucial national priorities: women's leadership and sound public policy. He acknowledged the vital role women have played in Pakistan's progress, from historical figures like Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah, Begum Rana Liaquat Ali Khan, Begum Shaista Ikramullah, former Prime Minister Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, to the women CEOs and leaders present at the summit.
"Shaheed Mohtarma occupies a historic place in this journey. She broke barriers that seemed insurmountable. Her legacy continues to inspire women to enter public life, lead institutions, and contribute to national decision-making," he said.
The Acting President argued that Pakistan's true progress would be gauged by whether women, regardless of background or region, have equal access to education, finance, technology, markets, and decision-making processes. He challenged the audience to consider if they were ready to establish systems that enable women to lead, succeed, and shape Pakistan's future.
Gillani highlighted his government's efforts in creating a solid legal and policy foundation to safeguard, improve, and empower women socio-economically and politically. This includes concrete policy measures, legislative reforms, and institutional changes addressing areas such as protection against workplace harassment, acid violence, forced marriages, and vani. The government also designated December 22 as Working Women's Day, recognizing the vital role of Pakistani women in the country's economic, social, and democratic vitality.
Furthermore, he noted the establishment of the Women's Parliamentary Caucus during his tenure, demonstrating a commitment to ensuring women's rights and representation.
