Govt to Review Urea Ban in KP After Trace & Track System

ISLAMABAD, (APP – UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 19th Aug, 2026)

Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain on Wednesday stated that the government will reassess and potentially lift the ban on the sale, purchase, storage, and transportation of urea in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa following the implementation of an efficient trace-and-track system.

In response to a Calling Attention Notice filed by Asad Qaiser, Faisal Amin Khan, and Shahram Khan, the Minister addressed the issue of urea fertilizer shortages and price hikes in the province.

He explained that the ban was initially imposed by the provincial government due to terrorist incidents where urea served as an ingredient in explosives. Urea is a crucial agricultural input, especially vital during the current crop season, with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa consuming approximately 300,000 metric tonnes annually, accounting for about 4.8 percent of Pakistan’s total urea consumption.

Rana Tanveer highlighted that urea constitutes around 65% of the fertilizer used in Pakistan. To ensure its responsible distribution, the government is developing a comprehensive trace-and-track system. A committee has been established to create standard operating procedures (SOPs) and a mechanism to track urea from manufacturers and distributors to retailers and consumers.

The minister set a deadline of one month for the committee to deliver its framework and recommendations. Assuring the House of the government’s commitment to addressing farmers’ concerns, he emphasized their dedication to finding a solution promptly while maintaining security considerations.

Two meetings of the relevant committee have already been held, with active work underway on the proposed SOPs and tracking mechanism. Rana Tanveer further emphasized the federal government’s support for the provincial administration in resolving administrative and governance-related challenges.
