Multiple people have died in a crash involving a police vehicle and a car following a pursuit, police have said.
The collision occurred between a police vehicle and a Volkswagen Passat on the A66 in South Bank, near Middlesbrough in Teesside, at approximately 03:39 BST, Cleveland Police reported.
North East Ambulance Service stated that "14 ambulance resources" responded and "a number of patients died at the scene".
A police spokesperson said, "Sadly, the collision has resulted in multiple fatalities. We are working to identify the victims and contact their families."
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) initiated an investigation, stating, "At this early stage, we understand Cleveland Police sighted a suspicious vehicle and a pursuit began."
The A66, a major artery through Teesside, was closed in both directions between Normanby Road and Church Lane, with the force expecting the closure to remain in place for the rest of the day.
The scene is located near industrial units and factories. A police van and a car with lights flashing were visible at the east side of the road, with two officers present. Motorists have been advised to use alternative routes.
The North East Ambulance Service expressed their condolences, stating, "Despite the best efforts of everyone attending, a number of patients died at the scene."
Anna Turley, MP for the Redcar constituency, expressed her deep sadness, extending her thoughts to the families and loved ones of the victims and to everyone affected. She also thanked the emergency services for their response.
