Mushroom Killer Must Stay in Jail Forever, Says Appeal Court
Prosecutors argue for a life sentence without parole for Erin Patterson, who was convicted of murdering three relatives and attempting to kill another by serving them death cap mushrooms in a beef Wellington.
In an appeal at the Court of Appeal in Melbourne, prosecutors described Patterson’s crimes as "truly dreadful" and a "betrayal of trust". They highlighted the "shocking illnesses" suffered by her victims, who all died, and the "concocting of a fantastic lie" to explain the fatal lunch.
Patterson, who attended the hearing via video link from prison, was jailed for life in 2023 with a minimum term of 33 years. Prosecutors argue this is "manifestly inadequate" and seek to increase the sentence or ensure she never leaves prison.
During the hearing, prosecutors listed Patterson’s prison activities, including an exercise yard and crafting hobbies, to which she reacted by closing her eyes and shaking her head.
The Court of Appeal judges have reserved their decisions, meaning the outcome of both appeals is expected in weeks or months.
