LAHORE, (APP – UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 17th Aug, 2026) Acting on the special directives of Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the City Traffic Police Lahore (CTPL) have installed more than 40,000 QR panic buttons in public transport vehicles, rickshaws, and ride-hailing cabs to enhance passenger safety and strengthen technology-based traffic management across the provincial capital.

Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Lahore, Syed Abdul Rahim Shirazi said the installation campaign was progressing rapidly with traffic police teams currently working at 45 locations across the city to equip public transport vehicles with QR panic buttons. He stated that dedicated teams had been deployed in every traffic sector for the initiative, while 12 additional teams had been assigned exclusively for rickshaws to expedite the process.

The CTO emphasized the necessity of QR panic buttons in public transport due to legal requirements and public safety considerations. He added that the initiative aimed to ensure quick emergency response and improve the overall security of commuters.

In response to requests from various rickshaw unions, the CTPL have also established four new licensing centers to facilitate drivers and expedite compliance with the new safety measures.

CTO Syed Abdul Rahim Shirazi further highlighted the department’s commitment to promoting smart traffic management and the adoption of modern security features across all modes of public transport. He warned of initiating action against online ride-hailing services that fail to adopt the prescribed safety and security features.

He noted that the installation of modern tracking systems in online cabs had further strengthened the monitoring of both passengers and drivers, contributing to a safer travel environment.

The CTO asserted that the CTPL were utilizing modern technology to provide citizens with safer, more reliable, and quality transport services, adding that technology-driven initiatives were significantly improving traffic discipline and public safety in the city.
