Pakistan Boycotts Israel Match at Samarkand Chess Olympiad
UrduPoint (September 16, 2026) - Pakistan has boycotted its scheduled match against Israel at the 46th FIDE World Chess Olympiad 2026 in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. The Chess Federation of Pakistan cited the country’s policy towards Israel and solidarity with the Palestinian people as reasons for this decision.
The Pakistan-Israel match, planned for Wednesday in the opening round of the international event, did not take place as Pakistan declined to participate. According to a press release, Chess Federation of Pakistan (CFP) President Syed Zeeshan Naqvi stated that Pakistan adheres to a clear and consistent policy regarding Israel and that the federation could not act contrary to the government's stance.
Naqvi further emphasized that the boycott also aimed to convey solidarity with the Palestinian people. He assured that while Pakistan will continue participating in international sporting events, the federation will respect the Pakistani government's official position on Israel.
The 46th FIDE World Chess Olympiad is hosting national teams from around the globe in Samarkand from September 15 to 27. The event includes separate open and women’s competitions with over 390 teams registered in both sections.
