Stifling Heat and Broken Facilities on TUI River Cruises
BBC News reports on the experiences of dozens of passengers who have accused TUI River Cruises of operating vessels with faulty facilities, including persistently broken air conditioning systems.
Passenger Experiences:
- Andy Peach and his wife spent nearly £4,000 on a seven-day cruise aboard the Skyla, experiencing stifling heat and malfunctioning air conditioning units. They were eventually transferred to basic hotels with only £300 in refunds after refusing the initial offer of £300.
- Joan Craven, who took the Skyla following Andy Peach’s experience, was also let down by TUI’s promises. She felt misled after being assured via email that air conditioning was working, only to find out upon arrival that it wasn’t.
- Wendy Charnley and her husband experienced similar issues on the Isla in April 2025, describing it as "like being in a tropical house at a zoo" without any sign of air conditioning.
- Kevin Darvill noticed broken facilities even upon boarding the Isla in Frankfurt, specifically mentioning a non-functional toilet in the reception area.
Refunds and Customer Service:
Passengers criticized TUI’s customer service, claiming inadequate refunds for their unsatisfactory experiences. The company apologized to affected customers, stating they aim to deliver higher standards. However, some passengers felt TUI knew about existing issues yet continued selling the cruises as luxury experiences.
