US President Donald Trump has announced he is launching stricter economic sanctions against Iran, along with any country that aids or does business with it.

He stated in a post on Truth Social that this move constitutes "the most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country", without providing further details or naming other targeted nations.

This comes after a 60-day ceasefire between the US and Iran expired on Monday, with no diplomatic or military resolution in sight. Trump’s actions appear to expand upon the existing US campaign of economic pressure initiated in April to sanction foreign entities doing business with Tehran.

In his social media post, Trump characterized this new phase as "economic D-Day" against Iran due to its failure to negotiate with the US. He threatened severe consequences for any country supporting Iran, stating: "ANY country that allows… financial institutions… to provide… lifeline to Iran will itself face TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences."

He did not elaborate on the specific punishments.

This announcement follows the United Arab Emirates (UAE), a US ally, severing all economic and financial ties with Iran in response to its alleged missile threat. The UAE’s defense ministry claimed detection of two ballistic missiles launched from Iran, both missing their targets and landing in the sea.

Iran has responded by warning neighboring Gulf countries against supporting US military operations, characterizing such aid as collusion. While China was not directly named, it is a major buyer of Iranian oil, a significant source of funding for Tehran.

Since April, the US has sanctioned several "teapot refineries" in China, the largest buyers of Iranian oil. China’s government initially criticized these sanctions, deeming them illegal and unacceptable.

Last week, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent predicted that Iran would soon face "economic isolation like the world has never seen before." In April, the US launched Operation Economic Fury, aiming to cut off Iran’s revenue streams through sanctions and naval blockade.

The BBC has reached out to the White House and US Treasury Department for comment on Trump’s latest declaration.

Earlier this week, there were also reports of Trump threatening to bomb Oman – a US ally – if it interfered with his plans regarding Iran.
